This narrow valley funnels trekkers from the lower villages directly up to the glacial basin. The trail climbs through dense forests before breaking into rocky alpine terrain.
The gorge section of the trek shifts your environment from subtropical to alpine. You walk along steep paths and stone stairs, flanked by sheer valley walls. As elevation increases, the air cools and the tree line fades.
Hikers usually spend two to three days passing through this corridor. Pacing is critical here as you quickly ascend toward 3,700 meters.
Overnight or lunch stop
This small settlement consists of teahouses surrounded by a thick, damp bamboo forest. It marks the transition into a cooler, high-altitude climate. The forest here stays shaded and cold. Keep a warm layer in your daypack to put on as soon as you stop walking.
Overnight stay
This is the last major stop before entering the actual sanctuary. The terrain becomes noticeably rocky, and vegetation thins out significantly. Always check local avalanche warnings for the trail just past Deurali, especially after heavy snow.
Overnight or 1-2 hours rest
Situated at 3,700 meters, MBC offers clear views of the sacred Fishtail mountain. It is not a true climbing base camp, as Mt. Machhapuchhre is unclimbed. Many trekkers spend the night here to acclimatize before the final short push to the main base camp.
